Apopka
The first settler came to the area while the Second Seminole war was going on. Peter Buchan, who was a Scottish silversmith settled in La Grange, Georgia but like a lot of us he and his family eventually came to Florida in the late 1830’s lured by the rumors of it’s fine, winter weather. He first went to Palatka by wagon–then by water to the St. John’s river and up the Wekiva River. He homesteaded outside of Apopka near Clay Springs. He planted crops, raised cattle and other livestock while continuing his silversmith trade.
The settlement was originally called The Lodge after the first Masonic meeting place in this area was built here (1856). By 1882 it was incorporated as Apopka CIty (became just Apopka in 1887) The word has been associated with the Creek tribes (“aka” and “papka” Eating Place)
This area saw the first indoor foliage businesses in the state and grew Boston Ferns which were moved from Orlando’s Lake Eola.
A freeze in 1917 forced the growers growers to move south, though. But the fern growers remained and the city aquired the nick name
“The Fern City”
The industry suffered as did the state and country in the 1930’s and it’s Depression and this resulted in an industry with more diversity and variations including more indoor foliage.

Porcher House

House is built of Coqunia stone and four white Columns, it is available for event but is also a historic landmark.
Built in 1916 by Edward Porcher & his wife Byrnina Mona Peck. Edward a South Carlina Huguenot, became a promient grove owner. An inventor of citrus handling equipment, he is credited being the first to work, inspect, and grade fruit. His wife’s who was of Atlanta, was the daughter of William Henry Peck, author of seventy-four historic novels.
Note the spade…heart and diamond carved into the coquina stone of the front of the house…Mrs Porcher’s favorite pass time.

Our first church (above) is St David’s Located in Davidstow
Davidstow means David’s Place and according to legend the church was founded by St David in the 6th century, whilst visiting his mother at nearby Altarnun—click on the following site & please scroll to the the bottom of the site for info on nearby churches

The current tower of the church reportedly dates from the 15th c but available records only covers its existance after it’s restoration in 1875. The rebuilding has given the interior of the church a spacious feeling due to the redone windows and other items added in the 19th c.
St. David’s Day is March 1st which is also the first day of Lent—some locals comment that this may have been placed on that date since Lent is a time when celebration is discouraged and thus could save the church a lot of money.

a Welsh saint is buried here. Legend says that this daughter of a Welsh Prince came here to seek peace and she stayed on when she found it in this vale. She spent her time either in prayer or healing those who sought her out with water from the holy well. Though the she is no longer here many feel healing still occurs during the evening worship at this church.
