Some doctors utilized dead bodies to help “cure” the  living.  Epilepsy patients were given medicine made using skulls taken from burial grounds, while ground-up mummies were sometimes administered to those with asthma and Tuberculosis.

LONDON’S PIAZZA: A HISTORY OF COVENT GARDEN – FROM MARKET TO TOURIST MECCA

Covent Garden, originally a fruitand vegetable market in the 1670’s. Stuff can be found at #27a.  Circle the courtyard and take in St.Paul’s Church, a creation of architect Inigo Jones.  ALso on the courtyard is the London Transport Museum.  At the opposite corner is the beautifully restored Royal Opera House.  Turn into Russell Street to reach the entrance to the theater Museum which presents a quick history of West End stages.  Take a right on Wellington Street and walk into Penhaligon’s Performers (#41) one of the two makers of traditional English scents.

St Fagans Castle and gardens

St Fagans named best museum in the UK (2019)

Judges described St Fagans as a ‘magical’ place made by the people of Wales for people everywhere

Cardiff is the capital of Wales.   It’s a great town—I’ve stayed their twice—-once on a tour—the year I stayed in London two weeks by myself—I did a 4 day 3 night to Wales –there was only 3 ladies (counting me) and a guide and we took our time and saw so much.  The second time was when I drove in England and my copilot wasn’t great at direction and I got a lot of street time in  big city traffic before we found the drop off for the car—next stop from there was Wexford, Ireland.  I  enjoyed both visits and hope to go back again soon.

On the tour we visited

St. Fagan’s

A museum that “celebrates the Welsh way of life and sets on extensive grounds wst of Cardiff.  This museum includes building brought from all over Wales from cottage to farm houses complete with pigsties. There are also worshops including a saddler, cooper, black smith and wood turner.    There are chapels , even a woolrn mill.  Besides toll booths and town buildings and the like is an Elizabethan mansion (I never got to see this, it was undergoing some major maintence when we visited it. ) within the walls of a Norman Castle.

The Red Castle was built on the side of a medieval castle in 1870—that about the time that Ludwig of Bavaria was building his dream castles—seems like a very popular time for Fairy Tale Castles
This is a collaboration of the 3rd Marguess of Bute and William Burges.  Burges recreated everything, architecture, furnishing, carvings, murals with Victorian Gothic Whimsy

Caerleon

This town east of Caradiff was built over the AD75 ruins of a major Roman military base, which was then called Isca.  The headquarters of the 2nd Augustian Legion of heavy infrany for over 200 years.  Today there are remains  still in existance of the Fortress,  Baths—which once had 60′ high vaults and the Amphitheatre—which seated 5,000.   e

it is also has a Barricks Museum

Said to be the onlhy one on view anywere and displays objects found at the site.

Charlton Horn Fayre

The Horn Fair

Can you find Pagan in London

In a city this old it seems likely that if you look close enough you just might.

For instance the Horn Fair.  This fair is held in Charlton Village every year    This fair is said to have been connected with Herne the Hunter—among other theories (including a tryst with a millers wife and KingJohn– and was some say,  London’s first Fair.  it was discontinued in 1872 because of it debachery—but then it was the Victorian period so who knows– but was re-instated in 1970 and  I’ve seen pictures of a faire as late 2009  so who knows  so much for horny pagans.

15 Best Things to Do in Greenwich (London Boroughs, England):

I read one theory that  the Isle of Dogs was named after Hermie’s 50 dogs (which had red ears apparently and  were called the Hounds of Hell. )   Not  a lot of support for that theory I guess.

East London History  Isle of Dogs

A bit more modern: the Anglo Saxon—the Saxons specifically  had a god named Tiw who was the God of Law—and whom Tuesday is named–But we’remore interested in the fact that the river Tyburn is named—now if you’re saying I don’t remember that river—well it could be because it for the most part ,while still running —-but it’s basically runs underground—in fact it was so polluted at one time it was covered overed a few hundred years.  Infact covering over actually cause a greater problem as it filled up in one area with noxious gas which exploded taken save building down.  But it still runs mostly underground from it’s source north of London until it joins the Thames (it flows out of a sewer pipe.  But there is an area of London that is named Tyburn—and today’s Oxford was originally Tyburn and Tyburn Tree   was a place (there over time were several in London) of public executions.   So maybe the old god hung (sorry) out there and considered all those criminals and highway men were sacrifices to him?

Five off-the-beaten-path sites to explore Native American history in Florida

Belleview:  The Belleview area was once a faborite Seminole meeting place called Nine Mile Pond.  During a lull in the Seminole War the Indians invited officers from Ft. King to attend a feast at the campgrounds.  It was a friendly affair where a huge fire illuminated the bronze dancers far into the night.  The Indians ardently desired to make peace if only the Americans would leave them alone.  But hostalities soon resumed.

The Mysterious Fate of the Romanov Family’s Prized Easter Egg Collection

The Eastereggswhich members of the royal family and the noble and wealthy gave to each other differed greatly fromthe traditional painted eggs of the people.  They weremadeof gold silver and decorated with emamel, precious stones and minature paintings.  Particularly splendid were the Easter Eggs commissioned by the Czarfrom Feberge, the leading firm of Russian jewelers at the turn of the 20th century.  They wererenowned throughout the world.
