But back to the Flight things:  In the 1920’s Pan Am was born (in 1927 to be exact)  And Signed a contract  in the fall of 1927 to deliver mail to Havana by October 19th—from their Key West location—or the US Gov would find somebody who could.  Naturally it wasn’t that easy but thru a charter at the last minute it was accomplished resulting in  over a couple hundred pounds of mail being delivered and Pan Am on it’s way to  being a major mover and shaker in the air—literally

And while Key West hasn’t paid too much attention in preserving their fight history—-Marathon  has at their Aviation Museum—and they’re only about an hour (50 miles north of Key West).  You could rent a car in Key West for the days drive if you didn’t bring your car (ie you flew) or you can take a Grey Hound bus —-

Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary sets on its own island in San Francisco Bay, off the coast of California.  A maximum security penitentiary that operated as a civilian prison between 1934 and 1963, it became notorious for having a high profile prisoners such as American gangster AL Capone.  Its island location, combined with the cold water and strange currents of San Francisco Bay meant that it was widely believed to be impossible to escape from.  The more than mile span was no easy task, let alone for unfit prisoners.

Star Trek is just one of the cult classic that Best Used Books has to offer.
St Petroc’s church nestles by the farms and the sea off the Tintagel Road,  It is quintessentially Cornish, homely, yet beautiful, unassuming but intimate and worshipful.  It has a font of local greenstone which dates from the Norman period, and the pulpit illustrates three sceens from the life of St. Petroc.  In Wales, Petroc is known as Pedrog; he came from South Wales in the 6th Century and landed at Padatow.  Much of the early missionary activity in this area stemmed from his work, and to him we owe the establishment of a permanent church in an unbroken heritage to our own day.  He founded a monastry, beor eventually becoming a hermit on Bodmin Moor.  We know him as St. Petroc of Cornwall, whose fast day is celebrated on 4th June.

I received this book from one of my friends that favored me with their kindness when I stayed for a month in Tintagel for a month—5 years ago this month—it is a recipe book which also gives the history of the small towns in the area and especially their historic churches.

Marlin Destination Guide

Marlin,  Tx:  In 1892 a gusher blew in Marlin–not of oil but of hot mineral water.  In a discovery that would change the face of the community, water shot 75 feet into the air.  Within three years, Marlin became a spa boom town.  People flocked from all over the country to enjoy he purported health benefits of the mineral waters.,,(today)…At the Hot Water Pavilion downtown visitors can touch the hot water pouring from a marble fountain. Across the street, a 1929 Hilton Hotel, one of the first built by hotelier Conrad Hilton, still stands as a poignant reminder of the town’s healing spa era.

Tampa where there’s Much to  Learn

Tampa was once the second choice for the premier city of the developing Florida’s west cost—Cedar Key was the developer’s Plant’s prime location—-But Cedar Key made the mistake of trying up escalate demands for purchases that were vital to his railroad the main thrust of his development.    And we all know what happened later due to Plant’s redirected efforts.  Today Tampa Bay sets on the Bay a great city with it’s own college, a port, bridges linking it to the city’s across the water way and so much more while Cedar Key “basks in sleepy isolation, and only remembers the glories that once was.

But a trip to both cities have their good points let’s look at some of Tampa’s today.

Surrounded by 6,000 acres of pristine forest, the Lodge at Wakulla Springs is North Florida’s castle. Built in 1937 by industrialist Edward Ball, the Lodge is not only one of the most beautiful buildings of its period, but also one of the few where you can stay overnight. Located in the middle of Wakulla Springs State Park, the Lodge’s 27 rooms overlook one of the country’s largest springs. Whether you enjoy fine dining in the Edward Ball Dining Room or want to cool off with an ice cream at the world’s longest marble soda fountain, the Lodge’s timeless beauty surrounds you. Have you heard of Maitland—it’s north of Winter Park (which is north of Orlando)?
Maitland is a bedroom community for Orlando now—but at one time it like Orlando was a pioneer community in central Florida.  It was originally the location of one of the multiple forts that crossed the area during the Seminole Wars—It was named for an army captain, that actually never made it here:  check out the historical marker here for more information on the Fort:

Maitland has some lovely historical sites, art museums and great lakes many with  great parks and today we’re going to visit one.  There are also several great restaurants.

Reelfoot Lake: Tradition, Mystery & Lore

(this gives a date of the earthquake in December 1811—-the quote below in Feb 7,1812  Interesting)

Reelfoot Lake State Park:  A cataclysmic earthquake on February 7, 1812—perhaps the most violent ever to strike the continental United States–caused an enormous area of land to sink as much as 10 feet.  Water from the Mississippi River entered this depression, creating a 14-mile-long lake.  Much of the lake’s charm and strangeness is imparted by the venerable bald cypress trees that fringe its margins.  They rise tall and ghostly from the dark water, and to spring and summer canopy the shoreline with delicate fresh green foliage.

Inscription.   This road was the first direct route from Northeast Florida to Maitland. It followed Maitland Avenue around this west side of Lake Lily and continued south on what is now Highway 17-92. During the Second Seminole War the United States Army used this trail to connect the forts along its route. Fort Maitland was built in 1838 on the west shore of Lake Maitland, a day’s march from Fort Mellon (Sanford). The fort was named in honor of Captain William Seton Maitland (1798-1837), who was cited for bravery in the battle of 1836, and died in 1837 as a result of wounds received there. The fort was located south of present Fort Maitland Park and was in use only until 1839. In 1915, Orange County paved the route with bricks, making it the first grouted brick road in Florida. This road became part of the Dixie Highway, which opened in 1925 and ran from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to Miami. In 1927 the road was joined to the Black Bear Trail at Lake Lily. Both names described the road from this point south. These bricks were covered by asphalt in the 1960’s and in 1998 the asphalt was removed and the Maitland Historical Society restored the bricks, with assistance

Waterhouse Residence Museum & Carpentry Shop Museum

820 Lake Lily Dr. (A&H’s Lake Lily Campus)
The Waterhouse Residence is currently closed to the public.

The day of visit Waterhouse Residence was closed  and as noted on their site as of 6/13/21 still is.

Regarding William H. Waterhouse Residence. William H. Waterhouse left his home state of New York to pioneer the unsettled interior of the Florida peninsula. With his wife and children, he settled in what would become the city of Maitland, building a skillfully crafted frame home of his own design in 1884. Today, the building is home to the Waterhouse Residence Museum, and has been restored to reflect the way of life enjoyed by a middle class Florida family in the late 1800s and the turn of the century. Adjacent to the house is Waterhouse’s Carpentry Shop, which has also been set up as a museum.

The house was added to the NRHP in 1983 (reference #83001434).

Somerville, TX

Some Texas towns have the distinct smell of cattle or oil, but when old-timers wax nostalgic about Sumerville’s early days they recall a different scent:  creosote, a wood preservative.  A tiny railroad town, Somerville once boasted a railroad tile factory (hence the creosote odor) and a roundhouse that serviced steam engines.  Travelers could always get a good meal at the passenger depot, which housed a Harvey House restaurant.  During the railroading era, these elegant restaurants were found in depots throughout the Southwest.  Alas, the Somerville depot is now gone, but it’s story lives on at the Sumerville Area Museum which is located in a historic building downtown.  Visitors can explore the town’s railroad past through historic photography memorabilia, military exhibits and pioneer artifacts.

Virtual tours: Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle:  Castle dates from 1080 when Wm. the Conqueror raised a motte-fortress close to the royal hunting forest (now Windsor Great Park) as part of a string of defenses around London.  Both Henry I and II began expanding the castle and stone replaced original wood.  Round Tower has been altered but still on top of William’s motte, dates from 1170.  Edward III 14th c. began transformation into one of the world’ most ionic royal palaces.  Charles II altered exterior creating a series of splendid barque state apartments.  George IV converted it to Gothic and a severe fire in 1992 damaged a 100 rooms that had to be restored.
