James IV: Always on the Move

James IV (1473-1513) was Scotland’s Renaissance king. Potentially as influential and powerful as his neighbouring rulers Henry VII and Henry VIII of England, James IV was destined to die at the Battle of Branxton in Northumberland. This was also the famous, or infamous field of Flodden, a critical moment in the complex and combative relationship between England and Scotland in medieval and early modern times.

The

earliest settlers to the Longwood

area arrived in the early 1870s.

John Neil Searcy

came from Tenn. in March of 1873 and

Edward Warren Henck

arrived from Boston in November of the same year.  Both came by

steamboat up the St. John’s River to Sanford

and were soon granted Longwood homesteads.  A small community had begun to develop.   Historic Longwood:  Longwood, Historic Florida Pamphlet.

   In the early 1880’s :

P.A.Demens

a Russian immigrant came to Longwood and bought a

small sawmill which he soon enlarged

This provided building materials in the mid 80’s for the town’s continued growth.

Demens in the Mid 1880s also founded

The Orange Belt Railroad

Which was completed from Sanford to the Tampa Bay Area  ending at a settlement that dated back to 1814–but became the

City of St. Petersburg

at the time that the railroad was completed to the site—it was named after Demens’  birth place in Russia.

The Longwood Inn

The inn was complated about the same time as the railroad reached it’s final stop and it has continued on as hotel, Umpire School, as well as playing the part of a hotel in a town (played by Longwood) on the edge of the Everglades in the movie  Johnny Tiger.
