Can Americans Still Travel to Cuba? How to Travel to Cuba from the US (2023)

The past decade has been a particularly turbulent period in Cuban history, from the re-establishment of diplomatic relations with the U.S., to the death of Fidel Castro, to the protests of the anti-censorship San Isidro Movement. A resident of Havana, Carlos Manuel ?lvarez employs the crónica form—a genre unique to Latin American writing that blends reportage, narrative non-fiction, and novelistic forms—to illuminate how this era affects a wide variety of everyday people in Cuba.

Few places evoke the spirit of early Christanity so much a Lindisfarne, a feeling enhanced by its seperation from the Noththumerland coast by a tide causeway.  As the mainland is left behind one somehow becomes enveloped in the timeless atmosphere of Lindsfarne, an intangible, inexplicable feeling that leaves few visitors unmoved, regardless of their religious beliefts.

Remembering Rosewood Tours/Fl.

Hannibal Square Heritage Center

The story of the Rosewood Massacre begins with the celebration of the New Year.  In January 1923, during a time when Jim Crow laws mandated, encouraged, and protected severe racial discrimination, a white mob descended on the predominantly Black town of Rosewood. This group included members of the KKK who had congregated in Gainesville (50 miles northeast of Rosewood) for a large rally the previous weekend. Responding to a later-dispelled rumor about an assault on a white woman (a common, and usually false, accusation behind many of the era’s lynchings and pogroms), the mob tracked, killed, and permanently displaced the Black residents of Rosewood. State officials suppressed reports of the event, now known as the Rosewood Massacre. Years later, Lizzie Robinson Jenkins clung to the firsthand accounts told by her aunt, a survivor of the massacre, and founded The Real Rosewood Foundation (TRRF) to research and expose the history of Rosewood.

The red glow of the sunset above the Rat Tower near Bingen on the Rhineis suppose to be the refletion of hell fire in which the wicked bishop is slowly roasting in punishment for his heinous crimes.

(this is referred to as Mouse Tower on internet sites but in Myth of the Norsemen by H.A. Gueber–which this quote is from– it is called the Rat Tower)

The bishop is Hatlo who became annoyed at the clamours of the poor who were starving during a famine.  He had them burnt and their souls returned in a swarm of rats.  They devoured him whole but apparently his soul still burns in punishment.

Rose Hall Great House Montego Bay, Jamaica | WestJet Vacations You Tube

I have visited this house and roamed the rooms of history and legend—I have also seen the tomb which has markings on three sides—originally ment to keep her spirit within its borders but after finishing 3 sides the participants began to question how they could be sure the spirit wasn’t roaming about even as they stood there and if they finished the markings it would be blocked from the tomb and even more active and murderous.  The job was never completed and so Annie Palmer continues free to come and go.

Hedy Lamarr: Golden Age Film Star—and Important Inventor

The name is Hedy Lemarr and she was an actress during Hollywood’s Golden Age, who was born in Austria in 1913 and came to America in the late ’30s and became a  U.S. citizen in 1953.

Her career began to fade and her last movie was made in 1958.

Hedy Lamarr – Hollywood Star Walk

She moved to Seminole County in the 1990s–first for several years in Altamonte Springs and then for a few months in Casselberry where she passed away on January 19, 2000.

Hollywood at Universal Studios Florida

I do have a small connection to this— my late husband was a plumber in the area and got a call for a service job to the Casselberry location (I believe though it could have been the Altamonte one).  He came home from a day on the job telling me about a former movie star that he did work at her house.  He said he never saw her and it was his understanding that she was confined to her bedroom and cared for by others—though he wasn’t sure if it was her health or just her preference.  He told me that there were many movie stars photos about the residence.

Now there is a  marker that commemorates the site of her death at her home in Casselberry, Florida on January 19, 2000 from heart failure at the age of 85. She died at her home on Wesson Drive in the Orange Grove Park neighborhood that is located adjacent to Red Bug Lake Park.

Bloody Sunset in St. Augustine: A True Story Paperback – January 1, 1998

This book is a true story of a ghastly murder in the nation’s oldest city in January of 1974. The victim was a former New York City model who in earlier years has moved in the highest social circles, which included the Kennedy family of Massachusetts. The murder investigation and subsequent trial involved many people from the highest echelons of St. Augestine and St. Johns County. The characters in Bloody Sunset are revealed exactly as they were and have not been embellished in any way. The victims were eccentrics in an eccentric city and readers will find them interesting, if not intriguing. The murder of Athalia Lindsley has become a legend in St. Augestine. For months after the slaughter tour operators would direct sightseers to the crime scene. The house where the killing occurred is pictured in a book featuring St. Augestine’s historic houses. This book explains the events that made the structure a “Historic House”.

Of course the fort here is bound to have a bloody past from wars with the indians several of whom were held in the fort and probably several who didn’t have happy endings—–there were also battles with the English—-presumed some of them ended up here as well.

ST. AUGUSTINE UNDER THREE FLAGS: A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF FORT MARION

On several trips to the fort and tours about it I heard tales of a body that was found  walled up in an interior area of the fort—all withered up over its centuies of lock up..   I have more recently heard that it was a couple and they were put here by her husband and while that’s a believable senerio I have not seen anything to support it  with historical info.

Disease & Disaster

Between 1614 and 1617 friars estimated that nearly half of the Timucua Indians died. Yellow fever became epidemic in 1649, killing Spaniards and Indians alike. A smallpox outbreak occurred in 1655, and killed all of the African Royal slaves, as well as large numbers of Spaniards and Indians. A measles epidemic struck in 1659.
