King James IV of Scotland married Margaret Tudor on 8 August 1503 in a union described as the marriage of the thistle and the rose, which, it was planned, would unite the kingdoms of Scotland and England. Margaret, who was the daughter of King Henry VII of England, was fourteen years old at the time of the marriage, whilst her husband was aged thirty. Before the wedding, James IV gifted Margaret several properties including Stirling Castle, Linlithgow Palace and Doune Castle. The wedding took place at Holyrood Abbey and the union inspired William Dunbar’s poem The Thistle and the Rose

Originally the town was a “Clay Cut” on the rail road line. In 1887 it was renamed after a railroad official: Col. Henry Haines. It was said that his name was used to induce the company to put a train stop here—what ever it worked and a depot was even built.
Today the City of Haines City is one of the fastest growing cities in central Florida and is strategically located just west of Orlando and east of Tampa. Haines City has amenities and assets that make it an attractive location for families, new business, and a variety of special events. Explore Lake Alfred
Lake Alfred
The town as named in 1913 for its adjoining lake. The lake in turn was named for Alfred Parslow, an early seettler who had acquired the original franchise for the railroad and built up an estate here.
Previous names for the town included it’s first, Fargo after Fargo ND from whence a number of those interested in the Fruitland Company which directed this area. This was discarded because of Postal confusion with Largo, Fl. Next came Chubb (origin unknown) which was discarded for the obvious reason. Bartow Junction was tried, but Bartow was only 15 miles away and people there were not happy about the choice.
