Mount Dora: Florida. A Driving Tour of the Beautiful Downtown

Mt Dora:  On Fifth Ave in front of Pizza Amore’s parking lot are two rusticated block columned and an old gate.  It seems out of place because it doesn’t belong anywhere.  It’s a sign that an old house once sat on that property which is now a parking lot.

About – CEDAR KEY ISLAND AIR TOURS

Welcome to the Island that is Florida in More peaceful time.

I read somewhere the other day that Cedar Key is what Key West was before the Conch Trains and the party crowds—-and though I’d never thought of it that way before it’s so true….both are small Islands and whie Key West is farther from the main land — Cedar Key is farther from the mainland big towns and heavy populations that we call civilazation.

Of course Cedar Key has only 773 persons living in an Area2.174 mi² (Key West has 24,843 in 7.21 mi²)  But its a great place that I’ve visited more than once.  It is a quieter place where you notice the bird’s song and the scent of the cedars and the sea surrounding you—and you see the Island Hotel, that dates before the Civil War.   And you find that you’re perfectly content to slowly sip you wine while soaking in the sun and pondering the tide.   And now my friend you have an idea why Cedar Key can be so addictive.

When dinner time rolls around it was said the best place to eat sea food on the island is that same hotel we mentioned before,   The place to go to go after dinner drinks and fun was th L&M Saloon…A local’s hangout described by travel magazines as a “funky tumbled down place” that looked a bit forbidding with a shabby door and neon beer signs, but actually was a friendly place where the locals were welcoming– but alas it is no more.

But exmaining the new places and the old that are still there it seems to me that it’s still a great place to go and enjoy yourself with out dodging tourist trains and huge groups of people milling about.  It is still a great time by the sea, shopping in local owned and operated shops as well as peaceful strolls in a place that social distancing would be more normal than in some others—-a place to find the sea as well as your sanity again

Best Romantic Things to Do in Eustis for Couples

Eustis is a city in Central FLorida.

The city has a population  of 20,700 with a good number of retirees among those numbers in this centrally located town,   which sits on the shores of a large lake by the same name, which is known for it’s fishing oppertunities..  There use to be a major citrus indusry here but the freeze of the later 20th century took that away.

This pretty town has a memorial libary, said to be one of the finest in the county, with 75,000 total volumes and a well trained professional staff available to make your visit to Eustis Memrial LIbrary enjoyable and rewarding.

It is located on County 19 (which runs the town’s whole length north to  south)–and north of US 441   and south of State 44

Ferran Park, Eustis: Virtual Tour

Seminoles used to hunt along the lakeshore and the the first white settlers called the lake Sinutke–after an Indian leader at that time.  After the wars (Seminole) the lake was renamd Eustis for Col Abraham Eustis who was instrumental in defeating the native Americans in the area.  It has been said that it is easy, even today, in seeing why the Seminoles loved the area.

Moses J. Taylor House

This was formerrly (Between Moses Taylor and now)

which has closed.
It is said that Moses Taylor, who was a founding father of Eustis and a real estate developer as well as having citrus groves.   He was from Conn. and had been a school teacher and later a Colonel in the Civil War.
After the war in 1871 he moved south to Tallahassee where he met and  married Annie Ross Barrington,  They had two daughters and a son before moving to Washington, DC where he work for the U.S. Land office and had another daughter.  They left there after 5 years and moved to what was “Pendryville,” , in 1881, where he built this house that was on what was at the time the outskirts of town.
He was instrumental in bring Eustis to public view and in so doing help boost the city’s growth.   And beside this he funded the building of several churches, the town school house as well as a business district hotel, The Eustis House.  And in his spare time he served on the school oard and was elected as a town clerk.  ‘
The house was restored in 1988 by the West family and updated by incorporating the kitchen and servant quaters into the main dweling resuting in this 3,500 sq foot structure you see today.
Jeano and Lee Broome who has family ties to nearby Mt. Dora came here and bought the propoerty which they  opened as a Bed and Breakfast in 1994 and listing it on the National Historic Register in 1996.

Sunset on Lake Eustis
Oh and Pendryville was renamed in the 1880’s to Lake Eustis for the beautiful lake by  which it sat, but by 1883 the Lake part was dropped.  Today you’ll find a charming village with a bit of southern charm and hospitality to make it worth a visit.
General Abraham Eustis
By the way the town of Pendryville was named after A.S. Pendry who built a hotel named The Ocklawaka House—which after 1880  was enlarged and became the (now Old) Waterman Hospital.  This was eventually abandoned for a more centrally located area.  This original building was much later torn down
Last I checked the site of this hotel/hospital was an empty lot and a new hospital owned by (now) Advent Health is long gone.  It is the Waterman Hospital.
And the Waterman name comes from Frank Waterman who had a Fountain Pen Co. in New York.  He used to stay at the hotel, which he bought and enlarged in the 1920’s  The building shown in the picture is the enlarged version.  This was a sucessful hotel during the 20’s but closed when the depression came to Florida and Waterman gave it to Eustis for a hospital.
Florida Hosptial Waterman is now
and its location is now Tavares

What is May Day? Meaning and traditions behind the date, and when the 2021 bank holiday is

May is a festiva[ time in Btitain, when figures from its pagan past come dancing out into the street, but did you know that historically it was a partiularly important time for chimney sweeps?  The May holiday was a time of year when sweeps could dust off the soot and have some fun.  In Rochester, Kent, The Jack-in-the-Green ceremony was central to festivities.  The 7 ft. green character would be woken at dawn on the Blue Bell Hill, Chatham, to accompany the chimney sweeps on parade, today the three day Rochester Sweep Festival is a vibrant mix of music, dancing an entertainment with more than 60 Morris Dancing sides taking parts.  And while you’re in Rochester, take a peek at its cathedral, the seconf oldest in England.
