In 1853, after Catherine Miller is murdered for daring to become a doctor in a field full of men, a molecular fusion between human decay and natural rebirth transforms her into a Northern Red Oak. One hundred and seventy years later, she remains a mute but sentient tree, rooted near a secluded Northeast Ohio house. After she watches in horror as the newest homeowner murders one of his PhD students, Catherine is resolved, somehow, to see that justice gets served.

Pirate Den: Tortuga

In 1630 a group of French and English buccaneers  who made their way attacking Spanish ships established a base on the island of Tortuga, a rocky place off what was at that time  Hispaniola in the Caribbean which would become a major location for pirates and settlers over the following years.

The following is from

This was in Wapping  the  paragraph below is from that UK web ( site click on Historic UK above) on pirates punishment and the like there,  I encouage you to read the whole article about this area in London—it may well be an area in the city you don’t know much about.

Perhaps the most famous pirate to be tarred and hung in a cage was Captain Kidd (see image), the inspiration for Treasure Island. In 1701 he was convicted of piracy and murder and was taken from Newgate Prison and executed in the same year. Rather gruesomely, on the first hanging attempt the rope broke and he only died on the second attempt. Even more gruesomely, his body was left tarred and gibbeted in an iron cage on the Thames riverbanks for more than twenty years!

John Lennon’s Home: The Dakota Apartments | Architecture of the DAKOTA APARTMENTS in New York

The Dakota is arguably the best-known residential address in the world, home to dozens of New York City’s most famous artists, performers, and successful executives. The rare sale of an apartment there, usually at jaw-dropping prices, is newsworthy, as is the financial and architectural health of the building itself, a landmark in every sense of the word.

The Final Moments of John Lennon – Visiting The Dakota & His First NYC Apartment / Strawberry Fields

The first true luxury apartment house built in New York City, more than 130 years ago, the Dakota is still the gold standard against which all other apartment buildings are weighed. Historian Andrew Alpern tells the fascinating story of how the Dakota came to be, how Singer sewing magnate Edward Clark dared to build an apartment building luxurious enough to coax the city’s wealthy from their mansions downtown for ultra-modern living on what was then the swamplands of the Upper West Side. Redrawn plans of the entire building, published here for the first time, show how Clark created apartments glamorous enough that they made living under a shared roof as acceptable in Manhattan as it already was in Europe’s grand capitals, forever revolutionizing apartment life in New York City.

The history of York is said to be the history of England. It is an ancient city with Roman walls and Viking remains, and the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe towers over the Medieval streets.

10 Alternative Things To Do In York England

The first picture is not from York but was one of the last I took at Whitby—Met this great guy and thought he rated a top spot—-

thanks for making our trip better with laughter and making us feel welcome too.

*****************************************************

York we weren’t able to see this time

Welcome to Fairfax House

We started our day (our last full one of this trip in York) at our hotel on St. Maurice’s Road Double Tree by Hilton.  With it’s great location in central york and only yards from our first destination:

MYO4226 - YORK CITY WALLS (Bootham Bar) - York Historic Environment Record

Bootham Bar

Bootham Bar

2-4 High Petergate

Do not enter the opening in the wall—rather turn  right and continue until you see the the base of the stairs built into the wall take a left and mount the stairs up to the wall.

A porcullis is on the left (Middle English: from Old French porte coleice ‘sliding door’, from porte ‘door’ (from Latin porta ) + coleice ‘sliding’ (feminine of couleis, from Latin colare ‘to filter’).  and a 19th c wall on the right. The window here is the original, as did’t expect attacks from the York side of the bar.

From the top of the steps going up to the bar look down the steps and to the right to see where the wall starts again

Its about 100 meters away from the other side of the road, that York’s corporation built through the walls in 1930s,

Then the Statue of  William Etty in the middle of the square

It is said that Etty is shown looking at the bar because he was a leader of the fight to save the walls from destruction by the Corporation and for use as a public path.  He is shown painting as he was a professional artist who did paint the wall, but was better known for his nudes.

St Mary's Abbey walls | Secret York

and on the right of the  square  the defensive walls of St. Mary’s Abbey

If you go the the 19th c slit window you ccan look out into York along Petersgate,

said to be one of York’s best streets which is added to by it being mostly car free, this street actually follows the line of one of the main road running though the Roman Fort, but not quite as staright as it was in the time of Rome.

You are walking on a Victorian built wall and beside battlements that were built at the same time.

But the majority of the walls are basically medieval.  They are built on earth ramparts that were started by the Romans and then grew to cover what was left of those originals.

About 100 ft before you get to

The Robin Hood Tower

The Robin Tower is Victorian and the small slit windows you see along here would never accommadate the weapons of Medieval England—however the tower does have some items you might be able to use including some benches and a view of the next bit of the wall

(At the angle of the corner)  You get your Good first view of the

Minster to the right..

York Minster from the city walls

This building took 250 yrs to build so it has windows of all 3 Gothic styles. The “decorated” style of the towers.  The simple spear shaped in the center–closest to the wall, are the oldest of the present Minsters and are early English (1220), the gardens below belong to the dean of the abbey who is in charge of the Minster and its rounds.

About 250′ further and you come to some steps which you can access .  There’s also another good view of the Minster here.

You can go down to the gardens and then return up the stairs—-or you do the garden another time and continue on the wall If you continue you will come to a 3rd view of the Minster.

The top the next tower is also a Vicorian addition with its small, pretty, but silly when one looks around at it’s location of this tower.

At the end of the corner you’ll be at  Monk’s Bar.
This is one of  the four fortified gateways on York’s  walls.  It was built in several stages starting in the 14th c. when there were threats from a hostile Scotland.   The second story dates from 1484 and the reign of RIchard III  and had a roofless well enclosed to guard the approach to the main gateway.  There was a series of murder holes overhead which allowed the defender to drop missles and the like on the attackers.

As well as being part of the Defenses Monk Bar has also been used as a temporary prison and a police house.  It retains two medieval toilets (known as garderobes).  The figures on top of the bar are said to represent a man hurling boulders.

Richard III Museum, Monk BarRichard III  Experience at Monk Bar                                                                                 (formerly known as the Richard III Museum)

While the bars is mostly 14th century Richard III did have the top part of the chamber here completed in 1484–probably paying for it himself.  Now it continues to work for Richard and since the discovery of the king’s body within the last few years the museum is now the Richard III experience.

There use to be a Heny VII museum at Micklegate Bar but that has been permanently closed.

It's a Shambles – but it's the most picturesque street in Britain | Yorkshire holidays | The Guardian

The Shambles name comes from the butchers that were so prominent the street and means slaughterhouse or meat market and if you can imagion that in the days of lack of hygiene this mondern street left much to be desired for those of us that live in the present days.  There would have been all kinds of animal remnants thrown into it.  On some properties even today you can see the meat hooks outside.  Meat is still sold in the Shambes, although it mainly comes in pasties!  Other shops in today’s street have fudge makers, gift shops and an Earl Grey Tea Rooms where you can sit under the oak beams and sip your teas surrounded by tapestries.

The Merchant Adventure Hall  is of major importance and is a Grade1 Listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument.

It was built between 1357 – 1361.  Before most of the craft and trade guild’s halls in Britain, making it one of the largest buildings of its kind and date in Britain.  It is very unusual to be able to see in one building the three rooms serving the three functions of a medieval guild:  business and social in the Great Hall, charitable in the Undercroft and religious in the Chapel.

                      Turn left in 98 feet

It is belived that other shrines were dismantled during the reformation, no later than 1541.  It is also said that they were broken up ad buried along this court as in 1835 sections of both shrines were uncovered and later in 1928 more pieces were found in an excavation.  And no one would be suprised if more pieces were found below the houses along the court.

York Castle Museum - Wikipedia

The museum also has other period rooms including a Victorian parlor, Jacobean dining room and a 1950s kitchen.  You can even visit the cells where it is speculated that Dick Turpin was once held.  The most recent addition to the new exhibition 1914:  When the World Changed Forever– opened to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War.

Roger de Clifford was hanged here for treason back in 1322.

Ok climb on up those stair but use care they are steep and takes a bit of effort to get there.

Stop half way up to catch some breath

Before the tower got its name this small area was the site of even worse loss of life.  One of the worst anti-Semitic massacres of the Middle Ages took place in York in 1190.  The city’s entire Jewish community was trapped by an angry mob outside this tower.

Complete your climb to the  tower site on the hill top.

Clifford’s Tower

Tower St., York Y01 9SA UK

On March 16th 1190 a wave of anti-Semitic riots culminated in the massacre of an estimated 150 Jews — the entire Jewish community of York–who had taken refuge in the royal castle where Clifford’s Tower now stands.  The Chronicier William of Newburgh described the rioters as York acting “without any scruple of Christian conscientiousness” in wiping out the Jewish community.

Accounts of this time can be found in the Chronicies of the Abbey of Meaux in East Yorkshire, and Roger of Howden

Go ahead and explore the tower then return to the head of the stairs

Anti Semitic feeling was running high throughout western Europe in the 12th c, stoked by the Christian fervour of the Crusades, that directed aggression against Jews across England, France and Germany as well as against Muslims in the Holy Land.

England’s new king Richard I was infact about to set off on a Crusade himself.  Rioting had spread throughout England since proinent Jews, including Benedict of York, had been denied entry to King Richard I’s coronation banquet in 1189.  Benedict was the wealthiest Jew of York and he was mortally wounded in the rioting at Westminster.

Return back down to the street

The Jews were officially protected by the king as his feudal vassals and sought protection in the royal castle, barricading themselves into the wooden keep. It is said that the rioters were egged  on by members of the local gentry who saw this a good chance to wipe out the extensive debts they owed the the Jewish money-lenders in the city.

Seeking to benifit from the instabiity of the French throne, Henry V of England,  made a claim to the French throne and invaded, defeating the French at Angicourt in 1415.  Four of Charles sons died childless, while the mad king claimed claimed his fifth son  (also Charles) was illegitimate.  So he signed the 1420 Treaty of Troyes, which recognized  Henry as his sucessor and married him to his daughter Catherine.

Rick Steve’s Torture Museums in Europe

The Tower of London has impressed—and terrified—people for nearly 1,000 years

Torture and Executions

It may be my opinion but to me the Tower built by a Norman invader:  William the Conqueror to hold London from being too troublesome didn’t really get into too crazy a place until years later after we went thru Kings named after plants and a war with dueling roses as a theme — also a name—-many died—-but the Tower still didn’t claim any place in the evil of mankind—until a King named Richard—and that whole things is now considered more of a fiction made up by a playwright that may well have been as much of a fiction whoever he really was—-and were the boys           killed there?  To date other than ancient rumors and a couple of long rotten skeltons –in a place where they have found several more over the years–and found before you could do DNA testing leaves that up in the air as well.

The Tower of London prison

But then came that 8–Henry guy whose’s evil deeds cost the lives of many wives—his first Katherine of Aragon—just divorced but forever (in her eyes) disgraced and (in everybody’s) betrayed—Anne Boleyn was actually put under a Frenchman’s blade and yes she was at the tower where she died—Jane Seymour his third victim–I mean wife died after delivering a son and heir—but dead all the same… the 5th—(I know there was a 4th Anne of Cleves (she outlived the king and the few other wives that survived him)—but Henry didn’t bed her—the marriage was  annulled and she was made an honorary sister of the king and given multiple castles which the crown provided money to keep up and money for her food and clothes so other than being removed from her home in what is now Gemany I can’t see that she fits the victim column).  There was a  5th who was Katherine Howard—very young and burdened with a fat, gross, stinky—from the sore on his leg which drained and obviously was infected and to my knowledge never healed—and she lost her head too –same charge as Boleyn:   too friendly with some male courtiers—and in both cases they took most of those male coutiers with them to a painful passing.  The last, Katherine Parr, outlived the king but fell victim to another husband, but that’s another story altogether.

Ribera House - Wikipedia

St. Augustine’s Historical Houses Tour (Self Guided), St. Augustine

This is a fine example of a historical house occupied by Promient well to do family.

Casa de Juan de Rivera |                                    The Ribera House

The House you see here today is an newer building reconstruction on the site of the 18th c foundation.  This     building is unusual for it’s second story—while most of the buildings in the historical district, now have a second floor, most were built in later centuries.  This houses upper floor was in fact built \ during the English occupation (1763-1783)

You’re never at a loss for things to do on Florida’s Historic Coast!

The house was originally coquina which was plastered over and  as was typical  it had no glass in the windows–just shutters to cover them.

Samantha Brown’s Places to Love | St. Augustine, Florida – PBS

The house has  displays of art objects including paintings and small statues, as well as at least one figurine of the family’s  patron saint.

ACTIVITY

Activity day

King James IV of Scotland married Margaret Tudor on 8 August 1503 in a union described as the marriage of the thistle and the rose, which, it was planned, would unite the kingdoms of Scotland and England. Margaret, who was the daughter of King Henry VII of England, was fourteen years old at the time of the marriage, whilst her husband was aged thirty.  Before the wedding, James IV gifted Margaret several properties including Stirling Castle, Linlithgow Palace and Doune Castle. The wedding took place at Holyrood Abbey and the union inspired William Dunbar’s poem The Thistle and the Rose

Haines City, FL 2023: Best Places to Visit - Tripadvisor

Originally the town was a “Clay Cut”  on the rail road line.  In 1887 it was renamed after a railroad official: Col. Henry Haines.  It was said that his name was used to induce the company to put a train stop here—what ever it worked and a depot was even built.

Today the City of Haines City is one of the fastest growing cities in central Florida and is strategically located just west of Orlando and east of Tampa. Haines City has amenities and assets that make it an attractive location for families, new business, and a variety of special events. With slightly over 23,000 residents the City of Haines City can be found in the Heart of Florida. Come visit and learn why people from all over the world call Haines City home.

Previous names for the town included it’s first, Fargo after Fargo ND from whence a number of those interested in the Fruitland Company which directed this area.  This was discarded because of Postal confusion with Largo, Fl.  Next came Chubb (origin unknown) which was discarded for the obvious reason.  Bartow Junction was tried, but Bartow was only 15 miles away and people there were not happy about the choice.

It is a most noble ruin, of immense size, and full of beautiful and romantic bits. There is a legend that a white lady is seen in one of the windows. Between it and the town there is another church, the parish one, round which is a big graveyard, all full of tombstones.

ABBEY AND CHURCH

Where is Whitby? Whitby on a map

So we’ve been on the bus for two weeks (as last week’s blog was bits and pieces)–now we’ve returned to finish off that day trip out of  York to visit the moors and towns out and about  them—today we’re doing Whitby and finishing up with moors info and pictures—Of course this particular area was made infamous by Bram Stoker and his book Dracula so you may learn some of the facts of the town from the writer’s pen as well as my computer keys.

Whitby Abbey

The first time we visited Whitby we also took a tour from York here—at that time we could only get to the abbey by climbing the 199 stairs  up the steep hillside to the abbey—I had pulled a muscle in my knee and didn’t think I could make it.

This time our tour bus did take us up to where the abbey set but we decided we didn’t have the time and retreated on the bus to the river

Whitby Abbey Things To See and Do

This is to my mind the nicest spot in Whitby, for it lies right over the town, and has a full view of the harbour and all up the bay to where the headland called Kettleness stretches out into the sea.

He can transform himself to wolf, as we gather from the ship arrival in Whitby, when he tore open the dog; he can be as bat, as Madam Mina saw him on the window at Whitby, and as friend John saw him fly from this so near house, and as my friend Quincey saw him at the window of Miss Lucy.

Dracular quote again

Visit the house where the young James Cook came to serve his seaman’s apprenticeship. This handsome 17th-century house on the harbour is now the home of the museum.

“Welcome to my house! Enter freely and of your own will!” He made no motion of stepping to meet me, but stood like a statue, as though his gesture of welcome had fixed him into stone. The instant, however, that I had stepped over the threshold, he moved impulsively forward, and holding out his hand grasped mine with a strength which made me wince, an effect which was not lessened by the fact that it seemed as cold as ice—more like the hand of a dead than a living man.

Remembering Rosewood Tours/Fl.

Hannibal Square Heritage Center

The story of the Rosewood Massacre begins with the celebration of the New Year.  In January 1923, during a time when Jim Crow laws mandated, encouraged, and protected severe racial discrimination, a white mob descended on the predominantly Black town of Rosewood. This group included members of the KKK who had congregated in Gainesville (50 miles northeast of Rosewood) for a large rally the previous weekend. Responding to a later-dispelled rumor about an assault on a white woman (a common, and usually false, accusation behind many of the era’s lynchings and pogroms), the mob tracked, killed, and permanently displaced the Black residents of Rosewood. State officials suppressed reports of the event, now known as the Rosewood Massacre. Years later, Lizzie Robinson Jenkins clung to the firsthand accounts told by her aunt, a survivor of the massacre, and founded The Real Rosewood Foundation (TRRF) to research and expose the history of Rosewood.

(this is referred to as Mouse Tower on internet sites but in Myth of the Norsemen by H.A. Gueber–which this quote is from– it is called the Rat Tower)

The bishop is Hatlo who became annoyed at the clamours of the poor who were starving during a famine.  He had them burnt and their souls returned in a swarm of rats.  They devoured him whole but apparently his soul still burns in punishment.

I have visited this house and roamed the rooms of history and legend—I have also seen the tomb which has markings on three sides—originally ment to keep her spirit within its borders but after finishing 3 sides the participants began to question how they could be sure the spirit wasn’t roaming about even as they stood there and if they finished the markings it would be blocked from the tomb and even more active and murderous.  The job was never completed and so Annie Palmer continues free to come and go.

I do have a small connection to this— my late husband was a plumber in the area and got a call for a service job to the Casselberry location (I believe though it could have been the Altamonte one).  He came home from a day on the job telling me about a former movie star that he did work at her house.  He said he never saw her and it was his understanding that she was confined to her bedroom and cared for by others—though he wasn’t sure if it was her health or just her preference.  He told me that there were many movie stars photos about the residence.

Now there is a  marker that commemorates the site of her death at her home in Casselberry, Florida on January 19, 2000 from heart failure at the age of 85. She died at her home on Wesson Drive in the Orange Grove Park neighborhood that is located adjacent to Red Bug Lake Park.

Bloody Sunset in St. Augustine: A True Story Paperback – January 1, 1998

This book is a true story of a ghastly murder in the nation’s oldest city in January of 1974. The victim was a former New York City model who in earlier years has moved in the highest social circles, which included the Kennedy family of Massachusetts. The murder investigation and subsequent trial involved many people from the highest echelons of St. Augestine and St. Johns County. The characters in Bloody Sunset are revealed exactly as they were and have not been embellished in any way. The victims were eccentrics in an eccentric city and readers will find them interesting, if not intriguing. The murder of Athalia Lindsley has become a legend in St. Augestine. For months after the slaughter tour operators would direct sightseers to the crime scene. The house where the killing occurred is pictured in a book featuring St. Augestine’s historic houses. This book explains the events that made the structure a “Historic House”.

Day 10/April 8: A Day in York—but spent on Outside of Town with Activities including a visit to the place Bram Stocker gave Birth to Dracula

Hotel Doubletree By Hilton York, United Kingdom - www.trivago.co.uk

So we started out at Our Double Tree Inn on St. Maurice Rd in York

Turn right onto St Maurice’s Rd/A1036    (223 feet)

The Danes conquered York in 867 AD and retained it as their Northumbrian Capital

Turn left onto Monkgate (105 ft)

The city’s present name is derived from the Danish  Yorvick.

York’s Viking History and Where to See it Today

Continue onto Goodramgate (746 ft)

York is home to the smallest Street with the longest name in the world:

Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate.

Continue onto Deangate (397 ft)

According to locals, there are over 365 pubs in York–one for every day of the year!

There is plenty of entertainment to be had in the evening with lots of restaurants,

cinemas

and even an opera house.

Continue onto Minster Yard  (433 ft)

However, unlike neighboring cities such as Leeds and Sheffield, which present visitors with a variety of adult entertainment venues to choose from, York has only one of those.  (no I’m not listing it– look it up yourself if you must)

Continue straight onto Precentor’s Ct. (30 feet)

Another thing the city lacks is an option to dress up and visit a casino.  Instead, visitors must rely on a variety of online entertainment, including live dealer casino tables which are said to be just like the real thing—Sorry don’t know about that either.

Slight left onto Duncombe Pl—–Our destination is on the right (72 feet).

The Dean Court, York – Updated 2023 Prices

Our first stop was the charming market town of Pickering

From William the Conqueror to Oliver Cromwell and Harry Potter, several notable historical and fictional characters have graced the town of Pickering throughout the years adding to its rich tapestry.  As far as small towns go in North Yorkshire, there will be few, if any, that boast a castle, a heritage railway and a church with world-renown frescoes; all of which attract thousands of visitors each year in their own right.

Pickering is a small town packed with a wealth of heritage.

Gateway to the North Yorkshire Moors Pickering has a long and fascinating history. Step back in time and enjoy exploring what life was like in this thriving market town. Visit shops from the past, discover the ancient craft of the blacksmith and marvel at our magnificent printing press (see events for demonstration dates). With special events, changing exhibitions, family activities and a beck side location for picnics there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The Heart of Pickering’s Heritage

St Peter and St Paul’s Church

in Pickering is renowned for its beautiful frescoes.  Many people make a pilgrimage to see them from all over the world.

 Picture

The medieval wall paintings, which give the church its fame, were probably first commissioned in 1450, and were painted the following decade, as details in the costumes and armour of some of the figures makes clear. Nikolaus Pevsner, the renowned expert on architectural history said that ‘This is one of the most complete set of wall paintings… and they give one a vivid idea of what ecclesiastical interiors were really like’. They are in fact one of about five sets of such extensive wall paintings still in existence in the country. The images vary in scale and in what they depict: some are large single figures; others tell stories. Details of each scene are given in the guide book, available from the Church bookstall.

RIEVAULX ABBEY

Rievaulx Abbey is the perfect choice for a peaceful day out and is part of the tour as well

In a secluded North York Moors valley.

Founded in 1132 it was first Cistercian monastery in the north of England.

It was one of the great abbeys in England until guess who  seized it in 1538.

Yep that 8th Henry and his

Dissolation of the Monasteries

that he continued to have done–reportedly he made a nice profit from it.    It is estimated that he made 1.3 million pounds (over 500 million today–or $642,800,000.00)

When it was shut down it had appox 72 buildings (the one above wasn’t one of them)

Which was occupied by the head man:  The Abbot

21 Monks

as well as 102 lay employees

It’s income was  £351 a year which is  £372,802.84 pounds in today’s money or $479,275.33 United States Dollar

The abbey also included a blast furnace at Laskill

It is said that it was efficient producing cast iron as good as any modern furnace of our days

As was often done the buildings were stripped and made unusuable and any valuable contents in their structure such as lead was removed for re-use.

The site was granted to Thomas Manners, 1st Earl of Rutland, one of Henry’s advisers.

It eventually  passed to the Duncombe family

16th and 17th centuries Rievaulx was an important iron-manufacturing site

Today the abbey ruins are in the care of English Heritage.

And you’ll never believe what happened to that lead they took from the buildings in the 16th c—

In the 1920’s the current owner took it out of storage and gave it to York Minster

For the restoration of York Minster’s Five Sisters window,

Yep back to the bus again.

The 15 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2023

Once again, it’s time to slow down our pace and look at those things that make America’s small towns grand: the opening of a new museum that’s been seven years in the making, a community coming together in honor of a prolific local author, and an annual Victorian Christmas celebration that’s been transforming downtown streets for 30 years. These are places that are rich in Blues music and Native American history, offer regional dining favorites like chile rellenos and fish fries, and boast walkable streets and remarkable national parks and monuments at their doorsteps.

Glastonbury :I have been  been to this southwestern English town several times—and stayed there for a time as well.   I have also been caught up in the possibility that it might actually be Avalon and yes I know Avalon was an island—but then so was Glastonbury or really the Tor (picture above).  Studies and digs have shown that this was the site of an in land sea—or at least large lake from which the Tor and other higher lands rose as islands along it’s depths.

‘King Arthur’s Tomb’ – Glastonbury, England

there is legnd that King Artthur was buried here at the abbey and his tomb was found but all lost eventually.  it is not in my beliefs as I believe Arthur was a chiefton (modern people use the word king all too oten around this land when I feel the rulers here were more like Clan Chieftons in the Highlands of Scotland rather than the more pompous King that came into power later on.) of the last of the pagans of this Celtic heritage lands and that it is Christianity that helped end his line—or at least their beliefs and that could be a great change while still maintaing the blood line.

Day 9–April 7: York has always held a reputation for being a stronghold of tradition, both in terms of its architecture and its demographic.

Another Crazy Day on a Vacation that went crazy despite great planning HONEST

The day started out good—but—-we left the motel and took a taxi 1/2 mile to the Leicester train station.

www.thedungeons.com/York

That went well…..in Peterborough we went to where we were directed to catch the train to York—-But it was running really late and eventually we found that the  train we had tickets on wasn’t coming and the train we were put on was the next scheduled train and we soon found that there weren’t seats enough for us…..I finally was able to locate a couple seats for my friends but there wasn’t a third—I ended up with a group of people—including a couple and a cute (much too young for me but I can still look—right?  RIGHT!) gentlemen that worked for the train company.

We all became aquainted standing near where the two cars connected and telling each other the purpose of our trip and all that……when we started to pull close to our destination I asked for Help—I had a major share of everybody’s luggage (for us three, not the group in the connection) So I ask the Railway gentleman if he’d help me get the luggage off—-and then the couple— volunteered to hold up the passengers exiting thru the area we were standing in so that we could clear with no problems.

If you have heard the Brits are boring and not much fun you definately haven’t met any—-and we got me off the train–with a strong young man shouldering the luggage and without being either of us or the luggage overran from the over-crowded train.

Guess who?—my saviors from the train—after they saved me, as well as luggage and even the train guy—thanks so much—and no harm done to anyone.  Such fun.  And all in York Safe and sound.  And met up with the rest of my party who set comfortably the whole trip.

Melton Mowbray (/ˈmɛltən ˈmbri/) is a town and unparished area in the Melton district in Leicestershire, England, 19 miles (31 km) north-east of Leicester, and 20 miles (32 km) south-east of Nottingham. It lies on the River Eye, known below Melton as the Wreake. The town had a population of 27,670 in 2019.  The town is sometimes promoted as Britain’s “Rural Capital of Food”; it is the home of the Melton Mowbray pork pie and is the location of one of six licensed makers of Stilton cheese.

Visit Oakham

The historic market town of Oakham (county town of Rutland), probably took its name from a local Saxon lord named ‘Occa’. The town church dates from the 12th-c and features some fine medieval carvings and unusual nave capitals. It shares its churchyard with Oakham’s 16th-c private School. One of the largest independent co-educational schools in the country, with around 1000 pupils. The school was founded by Archdeacon Robert Johnson, in 1584, along with Uppingham School (located just a few miles away).

Take a cab to your hotel

The city retains much of its medieval character and structure and walking into its center was (very accurately I must say) described in something I read as like “walking back in time.”  There are still many of the ancient timbered houses setting on the narrow, winding streets–the Shambles come to mind—and they’re all protected by a conservation order.  Also no cars in the center of town which furture adds to the atmosphere—and there’s lots of bikes moving over the cobbled streets.

We got some lunch at hotel and then headed out on the city—too soon to check in—they held our luggage.

Head SW toward St. Maurice’s Rd/A1036

We have mentioned  Henry’s (the 8th one) Desolation of the Monasteries.  This started with the smaller ones but this gradually esculated to larger monasteries and more violent measures of destruction and by 1536 it had fostered serious unrest with the people of the north.

This was the second rising in Yorkshire and the north and a much more serious one.  Far from the much more inhabited south, this northern land was often barren–the towns here were fewer and as they say “far between” and the monks instead of evil money graspers as Henry said they were—here were considerd holy and helpful and were evidentally quite popular.   Infact in Yorkshire they were the only people that helped and provided hospitality to the wandering beggars as well as the ordinary traveler.

The king then sent the Duke of Norfolk to Yorkshire but when he later reached Dorchcester he found the rebels 30,000 strong and too formidable to risk a battle.  SO he adopted the usual expidient in such cases—general promise of pardon if the rebels should submit and this was successful for the time being.

But a further outbreak (1537) gave the King an excuse to act with ferocity congenial to his temper.  “You shall in anywise” he wrote to his agents “cause such dreadful executions to be done upon a good number of the inhabitants of every town village and hamlet…as well as by the hangings or quartering with their head and quarters being distributed and put on display at all the towns great or small as a warning.”

York Minster

Unfortnately we could not visit the church as it was Easter time and the church was basically only open for worshipers.

It has been called the finest example of decorated style in England.  The roof is of wood, but painted to look like stone.

It has 125 stained glass windows (14th and 15th c)

William the Conqueror

Some feel that William may have grown to regret the level of destruction he wrecked on York and the north.  Chronicler Orderic Vitalis                            tells us the King confessed on his deathbed on his treating “the native inhabitants of the kingdom with unreasonable severity, cruelly oppressed high and low, unjustly disinherited many, and caused the death of thousands by stavation, and war, especially in Yorkshire.

Nevertheless the operation achived his aim.  The Rebellion was defeated and the population subdued

Bayeux Tapestry—the story of the Battle of Hastings between the Vikings and the English in Normandy area today.

Prior to the Normans there had been other North Men in York. (which is basically what Norman stood for.)  They were originally part of the Viking raiders that terrified Europe and beyond before they settled in France and did more refined terrifying).  The Period between the demise of Eric Bloodaxe in 954 and the arrival of the Normans in 1068 is known as the Anglo-Scandinavian.  York was ruled by an English King but was still very much influenced by Viking culture.

For the period York during this time was relatively peaceful.  Eric had been defeated by the English King Eadred, who died a year later in 955, eventually suceeded by his nephew Egar, who ruled England  from 959 – 975, which is called “the Pacable as there were no foreign attacks.

Even though York was important, English kings did not come here—at least only rarely.  They did however appoint earls to keep a grip on Northumbia.  There is a legend that an invading Viking leader King Svein Forkbead of Denmark was buried in York proper in 1014.

Another person and a King eventually—that had an attachment with York (as the cab driver pointed out earlier) was Richard III—the one whom an Elizabethen playwright wrote a bad review (but a good play) about him that has until recently greatly affect his reputation.

RICHARD III: HERO OR VILLAIN?

Richard has a two-legged walking aid which fits over his left arm, and he rests against it with his legs bent. The pose emphasises his hump. the background is a medieval building.

Richard III visited York on several occassions during his short reign and staying for 3 weeks in 1483.

It even has been reported that Richard planned his eventual burial at York Minster, building (or rather having built) an enormous chantry chapel there with 100 chaplins to attend his body and pray for his soul.

York looked to Richards to assist in times of economic difficulty and Richard does appear to have championed them in his short reign.  The city sent troops to support him over this time—including to help him against Henry Tudor–unfortunately those troops arrived to find Richard dead and the Tudor’s assuming control of the country.

, and won his first race in just his sixth start. In 1983, Allison moved up to the ARCA Racing Series, winning both events at “hometown” track

Talladega Superspeedway

that season and being named Rookie of the Year in 1984.

Fast Facts: Davey Allison

On July 12, 1993, fresh off a third place finish at New Hampshire the day before, Davey Allison boarded his new helicopter with family friend, Red Farmer. The two left Hueytown, Alabama, home to the “Alabama Gang,” for a day at the Talladega Superspeedway to watch friends David and Neil Bonnet test a car for David’s Busch Series debut.

When Allison arrived at the track, he was attempting to land the helicopter in a fenced in area on the track’s infield. Just about a foot from the ground, the helicopter suddenly spun out of control and crashed. Red Farmer suffered minor injuries while Allison suffered serious head injuries from the crash and died the next day.

The Vikings: A Memorable Visit to America

Analysis of tree rings on the arrival of the Vikings in North America.  Although historians have long known that Norse settlers reached the New World before Christopher Columbas, the date remained a mystery.  However expets have now confirmed that logs discovered at

L’ Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland,

were felled in AD 1021 using tool associated with the Vikings, rather than native inhabitants.  The researchers were aided by radiation damage within the tree rings, caused by a solar storm that took place in AD 993.
